********************************************************************** Carroll Kappel 19 December 2010 ********************************************************************** It is with deep sadness that I bring to you the unfortunate news of Carroll Kappel's death. Carroll passed away on Sunday, December 19 after a short and courageous battle with metastatic non-small cell cancer of the lung. Carroll handled his incurable disease with great valor and spent his final breaths sharing humor and comfort with his family. He loved life dearly but did not fear death. He imprinted a lasting legacy in our lives through his passion for living, and his undying will to face each moment with humor, clarity and courage. Carroll was born in Houma, Louisiana in 1937. He spent his childhood and youth in Louisiana where he attended Nichols State University. After spending time in the Army and a few years as a rough neck, he took on the budding field of computer science, where he became a pioneer. He helped develop systems and code for the geophysical industry at a number of firms and for the U.S. government at NASA, but was always proudest of his time during the first, seminal years at GSI. Carroll was an active member of his Community and a loving friend, brother, husband, father and grandfather, and will be deeply missed. He is survived by his wife, Yvonne, sisters Elizabeth Bourg and Linda Gaston, Children Jon Kappel, Jason Kappel and Emily Bouthillette. He was preceded in death by his mother and step-father, Madge and Willis Gaston. A private funeral service will be scheduled at a later date. The family asks that in lieu of flowers, a donation be offerred to the American Cancer Society (at cancer.org). ********************************************************************** Bill, Carroll passed away yesterday. Would you pass this on to the GSI community. Mike Lockhart
